We have a Microsoft 2008 R2 Active Directory setup with integrated DHCP and DNS. On our DHCP servers we have the following items checked: Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records only if requested by the DHCP clients Discard A and PTR records when the lease is deleted On a PC, I have verified that when the DHCP server hands out an IP address, A and PTR records are created in DNS On a Mac, when the DHCP server dishes out the IP address, NO A or PTR records are created When I look at my DNS setup, Dynamic Updates are set to Secure Only Any ideas on why when a Mac gets an IP address from DHCP, DNS is not updated? I suspected that secure updates was the issue but other than turning off secure dns udpates to verify, I did not know how to do the nice trace you did.

They can use DNS in a Windows 7 virtual machine (VMware Fusion 3.1.3) running under OS X. Last but not least, your Mac. The Magic Mouse is by far the best Apple mouse to date. But even though Apple is known for spending a great deal of time on design, ergonomics, and quality assurance, the Magic Mouse has a few quirks that some people (including me) have noticed.

Now comes the debated, do I live without any DNS records for my Macs or do I live with DNS updates done in an non-secure fashion. Where does the solution for this lie, with Microsoft or Apple? Is this even on their radar to be fixed? MacEnterprise, Inc Subscription Options and Archives Bob Nance 30/9/2010, 13:05 น. Is this even on their radar to be fixed? Apple's method is 'standards-based.' Microsoft's method is 'superior.' If Apple wants to stay on it's high-horse, they are certainly justified, but, in the end, it will be up to them to make 5% of the computer's that run their operating systems play nicely with the other 92% of computers in the real world.
I would guess that Apple will, eventually, get around to fixing this, assuming that Microsoft publishes the method.Bob - Bob Nance Novation Systems, LLC 256-534-4620 MacEnterprise, Inc Subscription Options and Archives HendersonD 1/10/2010, 4:11 น. Could this behavior cause problems with Apple Remote Desktop? Our school district recently upgraded all DHCP and DNS servers, not sure from what to what just that a 'an upgrade' was performed. Since this upgrade we have been seeing odd behavior with ARD. Whenever a computer already added to a list in ARD gets a new IP address it appears as unavailable until re-added to the list with it's new IP address. If the new IP address is one that was previously assigned to another computer in the list the DNS name that appears in the list is the previous computer. The only way we have been able to correct the names appearing in the list is to remove and re-add both computers.
A royal pain in the a$$ when you have 40+ schools with 200+ machines setup in ARD. Or should we look for some other change causing this behavior. Will the possible fix come from an update to ARD or is a change need on the DHCP/DNS server side? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I'm not sure I understand the severity of the issue. We have a similar situation here: DDNS is never updated (set for client-side, only, in our environment), so DNS records are always off. MDNS is not allowed to route across our LAN None of this has never really affected our ability to work. We use ARD to scan IP ranges regularly, capturing what we can. Now, admittedly our workstations are more or less immobile. But even our laptops can be grabbed, if necessary.
What you may require is some sort of additional agent-based asset management tool (Absolute Manage or Casper, for example). That will ensure your mobile equipment is always available wherever it is on the network. Otherwise.as I said, just because DDNS never updates hasn't really hurt us.David Hester.
